Description

This is a Mediterranean terracotta/clay storage jar, commonly referred to as a Spanish jar. These vessels were traditionally used for the bulk storage of olive oil, pickled meats, wine, or grain. Large jars like this are occasionally found in old Jamaican great houses as water storage vessels after their original contents were used.

Given the crispness of the seal and the rim profile, this authentic antique jar dates to (c. 1850–1890). The white, vertical drippings are actually lime wash markings. These were often applied by the potter to identify specific batches. This specific seal, the "Sun Face" (or Sol) within a raised crescent arch, is the classic mark of the pottery works in Lucena, Spain. Lucena was one of the most important centers for terracotta jar production in the 19th century. The large size makes it a centerpiece item, popular among collectors and interior decorators as high-end garden ornaments and interior design focal points providing a dramatic presence.
